Senja at a glance
The Senja scenic route runs from Botnhamn to Gryllefjord on roads 862 and 86. It is 102 km (63 mi) long, including detours to Husøy and Mefjordvær. The road authority lists lookouts and rest stops at Bergsbotn, Tungeneset, Ersfjordstranda and Mefjordvær.
This guide covers the route, the hikes, the two ferry lines and a few rules for motorhomes. It is an independent site, not run by a municipality, a ferry operator or a tour company. For the other island landscape of the region, read the Lofoten page. If you plan to drive both, the road trip page puts the pieces together.

Stops on the scenic route
The places named by the road authority, and what is worth knowing about each.
Bergsbotn
The lookout platform is 44 m (144 ft) long and, according to the road administration, accessible by wheelchair. The photo further down shows the view across Bergsbotn.
Tungeneset
Another lookout and rest stop on the route. Use it as a break between the longer drives.
Ersfjordstranda
The third of the named lookouts and rest stops.
Husøy and Mefjordvær
These are the detours counted in the 102 km. Mefjordvær has both a lookout and a place to empty a motorhome toilet.

Hikes: Segla, Hesten and the alternatives
Senja's best-known peak is Segla. Two separate outings are often mixed up. Fjordgård is the starting point for the climb of Segla itself. The famous view of Segla is taken from Hesten, which is a different hike. Do not plan them as one route.
- Segla from Fjordgård: the climb to the peak.
- Hesten: the viewpoint for the classic Segla photo.
- Husfjellet: described as a less demanding alternative.
- Breitind: described as very demanding and exposed.
A fee for parking at Segla, trail profiles and current closures are not confirmed here. Check the conditions with a local source before you start, and keep to the safe side with weather and daylight.

Ferries: Andenes to Gryllefjord and Botnhamn to Brensholmen
Two summer car ferries run by Svipper connect Senja with its neighbors. They are not the same. Line 180 links Andenes and Gryllefjord, and line 181 links Botnhamn and Brensholmen.
| Line | Passengers | Car up to 6 m (20 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 180 Andenes to Gryllefjord | NOK 100 per crossing for foot passengers, cyclists and passengers aged 30 to 66 since 15 June 2026 | NOK 925 without a discount |
| 181 Botnhamn to Brensholmen | People and bicycles free | Summer surcharge from 20 June to 31 August 2026, regular prices from 31 August |
On line 180, children, young adults aged 18 to 29 and travelers with proof of a concession ride free. The driver is part of the vehicle fare. Discounts on the car fare are 10 percent with an AutoPASS Brikke, 50 percent with a private prepaid contract and 40 percent with a business contract. The total length counts, including trailer and load. The tariff sheet is dated 2026, with the new passenger fare from 15 June 2026.
On line 181, the fare sheet runs the summer surcharge to 31 August and the regular prices from 31 August. The sheet is not clear about that day itself, so ask on board if you travel on it.
Private cars cannot reserve a place on the Svipper car ferries. Exceptions for coaches are described separately. Do not confuse this with the Svipper fast boats, where a seat guarantee has applied since 1 February 2026 and you should be at the boarding point 20 minutes ahead in Tromsø, Finnsnes or Harstad. Exact operating days and crossing times for the summer ferry in 2026 are not confirmed here, so take them from the operator's timetable.
Motorhomes and camping
Do not use the toilets along the scenic route to empty the toilet of your vehicle. The road authority names three places for disposal: Skaland, Senjahopen and Mefjordvær.
The right to roam allows tents on uncultivated land more than 150 m (490 ft) from an inhabited house or cabin. A stay of more than 2 nights in the same place usually needs the owner's consent. It does not cover private gardens or motorized off-road driving.
Seasons and northern lights
The ferry fares above are for summer. For light and weather, use the best time to visit page, because no snow-free hiking window for Segla is confirmed. The dark season for northern lights runs from early September to about mid-April in the far north, but no one can promise a sighting and no ranking of Senja against other places exists. Read the northern lights page for forecasts and cloud. Many Senja excursions start in Tromsø, which has its own tour guide.
