Alta in a nutshell
Alta lies in Finnmark, in the far north of Norway. The Rock Art of Alta has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, listed under criterion (iii). The UNESCO entry also records a minor boundary change in 2026, so the year of inscription and the current boundary are two different facts.
The rock carvings are the reason most visitors come. The Alta Museum is the place to start. Beyond the museum there is the Sautso canyon on the Alta River, and a dark season in which northern lights are possible. This is an independent guide, not run by the museum, the municipality or a tour operator.

What to see in and around Alta
Three things with documented details, plus one that depends on the sky.
The rock art
Prehistoric carvings that make up the World Heritage Site. The museum explains them. Whether the outdoor carvings can be seen in winter and which rules apply on the outdoor paths should be checked with the museum.

The Sautso canyon
A canyon on the Alta River, reached on a long hike. Summer boat trips depend on the water level.
Northern lights
Possible in the dark season, never guaranteed. See the section below and the northern lights page.

The rock art of Alta
UNESCO describes the carvings in two places, and the age differs. The short description gives roughly 4200 to 500 BC. The statement of the site's value says roughly 5000 BC to the year 0. Both are the UNESCO text, so this page does not merge them into one span. Treat the dating as a broad range.
The best way in is a visit to the Alta Museum, which has the carvings as its subject. Rules for the outdoor paths should be checked with the museum.

The museum is closed on 1 January, 24 to 26 December and 31 December. A special opening on 26 December from 11 to 16 is also listed, apparently for cruise ship days, which contradicts the closure. Do not plan around it. Special hours for cruise ships can be dropped when a ship call is cancelled.
The Sautso canyon
The Alta Canyon, called Sautso, lies on the Alta River. The regional tourism organization describes a hike from Bæskades of 13 km but does not say whether that is one way or a round trip, so do not plan a fixed loop from it. An alternative route via Tutteberget and Stilla has no marked trail, and the same source recommends map and compass skills.
Summer boat trips on the river need enough water, so they are not a year-round service. Parking, access permits and tour prices for the canyon are not listed here. Ask the tour provider or the local tourist information before you go.
Northern lights in Alta
The Northern Lights Cathedral in Alta is a landmark of the town. For the lights themselves, the University of Tromsø describes the dark window from early September to about mid April in the far north, with a favored time of about 20:00 to 02:00. You need a dark sky and gaps in the cloud.
No ranking of the best places has been published. There are no success rates for Alta, Senja, the Lofoten or the North Cape, so any claim that one of them is best is a guess. A place in the north improves your chances but guarantees nothing. For the comparison see the northern lights guide. If you also plan to see Troms, Tromsø and the Lyngen Alps each have their own guides.
Alta has a polar night in the rough span of late November to mid January. The midnight sun is not covered here for Alta.

Finnmark beyond the town
The photo shows a herd of reindeer near Hamningberg in Finnmark. Herds belong to reindeer herders. Keep your distance, stay on the road or path, and do not approach or feed the animals.
For other parts of the north, see the North Cape and the road trip planning page. Alta does not appear as a regular port in the Havila schedule for the coast.
