There is no single best month

Northern Norway runs from the polar night to the midnight sun, and the answer changes with the goal. Summer is the time for long days and mountain hikes. The dark season, roughly from September to mid-April, is the time for northern lights. Winter adds snow, short days and special driving rules. No published source ranks the months in one universal order, so the sections below set out what each season offers.

This is an independent guide. The light dates come from published tourism guides and are planning figures, not calculated for 2026. Weather and mountains decide what you actually see. The rainfall figures are climate normals for 1991 to 2020, not a forecast.

Season by season

What changes in each part of the year.

Late spring to midsummer

This is the period of the midnight sun and the hiking season. On Svalbard the midnight sun starts on 20 April. At the North Cape, the hall is open 10:00 to 01:00 from 18 May to 17 August, according to the operator's English page. The Norwegian page shifts several of these dates by one day.

Late summer

Hall hours at the North Cape shorten from 18 August, to 10:00 to 23:00 until 31 August and 10:00 to 20:00 from 1 to 13 September. The summer supplement on Senja's Botnhamn to Brensholmen ferry applies from 20 June to 31 August 2026.

Autumn

Darkness returns and the northern lights season begins in September. October is the wettest month in both Bodø and Tromsø. From 16 October winter tyre rules apply. The Havila ship Capella is announced to be in the yard from 29 October to 30 November 2026, and a new gondola in Narvik is announced for January 2027.

Winter

Polar night, snow and the convoy to the North Cape. Alta Museum uses its winter prices from 2 January to 30 April and from 1 October to 30 December 2026. Tromsø lies in the centre of the aurora oval and can show lights even at low activity, according to the University of Tromsø. For driving, read our road trip guide.

Spring

The dark season for northern lights ends around mid-April. The winter tyre rules end on 30 April, although conditions can still require winter equipment. Hikes such as Reinebringen are recommended from May.

Northern lights: when and how

The dark window in the far north runs from early September to about mid-April, and the preferred time of night is roughly 20:00 to 02:00. Northern lights are not tied to snow or extreme cold. Coastal cloud can block the view, while inland sites may be clearer but colder. The University of Tromsø publishes forecasts one and four hours ahead for places including Tromsø and Svalbard. A forecast is a model, not an observation. Our northern lights page covers places and planning. For a base in the city, Tromsø and its weather page go deeper, and the midnight sun guide covers the light in summer.
