Bodø in a nutshell

Bodø is a harbor town on the coast of Nordland. For most visitors it is a gateway more than a destination: the ferry to Moskenes on the Lofoten leaves from here, Widerøe flies from Bodø to Røst, Svolvær and Leknes, and the coastal ships call here on the way north. A well-known sight nearby is the Saltstraumen, a tidal current between two fjords.

Bodø was a European Capital of Culture in 2024, together with the Nordland region under the title Arcticulation. That year is over, so there is no running festival program to plan around in 2026. This is an independent guide, not run by the municipality, the ferry operator or an airline.

Why people come to Bodø

Four reasons, in the order most visitors need them.

The ferry to the Lofoten

The route 18-782 runs from Bodø to Moskenes. Foot passengers travel free, and cars and a paid seat guarantee are priced separately. Details are in the fare table below.

Flights to the islands

Widerøe names Bodø as the starting point for direct flights to Røst, Svolvær and Leknes. Fares and times depend on the day, so none are given here. See the Lofoten page for the islands.

Saltstraumen

A tidal current that links the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord. The time to be there changes every day.

A stop on the coastal route

In the Havila schedule, northbound ships stay in Bodø from 13:05 to 15:20. Ships go on to Tromsø. See the Hurtigruten page.

Saltstraumen: when to go

The attraction is the current itself, not a show with a fixed start. A day-by-day calendar for the strongest inflow and outflow is published by the local tourism office, with data from the national mapping authority. Times are local. The current stays strong for about one hour before and after the stated time. Do not take a high-water time from a tide table as the time of the strongest current.

As an example, the calendar for 15 October 2026 showed the strongest inflow at 00:16 and 12:35 and the strongest outflow at 06:14 and 18:48. That is one past day, not a schedule for your visit. Use the calendar for your own date.

The mapping authority publishes a 2026 tide table for Saltstraumen with water levels. For the next five days it recommends the water level forecast, and for current maxima the separate current calendar. The tourism office warns that diving in the current is not for beginners. No general swimming ban is documented, but that is no recommendation to swim.

Booking in advance is not required. If you booked a guaranteed place, be ready 45 minutes before departure. The operator's own pages give different shares of reservable capacity (50 or 60 percent) and different deadlines (8 pm the day before, or 10 hours ahead), so check the rule when you book.

The timetable for 16 October 2026 showed 16:45 to 20:00, which is 3 hours 15 minutes, and a cancelled departure at 00:45. That is a single-day finding. A winter timetable for 2026/27 applies from 7 September 2026.

Light and rain

Bodø gets midnight sun from 4 June to 8 July, according to the national tourism board. It has no true polar night, though the mountains hide the sun in the second half of December.

The official 1991 to 2020 normals for the Bodø VI station show rain peaking in autumn: 129 mm in September, 138 mm in October and 116 mm in November. May and June are the driest months at 65 mm each.
